Anyway, remember back in the late-ninties, early 00s, when DJ Shadow rained supreme, and that UNKLE shit was everything you were listening to? Weren't you sad when he parted ways with James Lavelle? Me too, me too.

New Joy

There's a radio rip floating around in cyberspace of some new Joy Orbison. There's an upcoming release on Hotflush, the tracks are Jels and the one you can hear below is Wade In.

Really feeling this track, but still, I have to say, and I hate being this guy, but where's the tune that captures the blissed out place of Hyph Mngo? I guess it's a compliment that I want "more of the same", but what I do love about Wade In is the hard edge of the tune. If this is a direction he's going to explore, I'm very cool with that as well.

Shing02 - 夢幻殿 Mugenden (TOKiMONSTA remix) by TOKiMONSTA

Tokimonsta remix above is sick! It's got that nutty percussive feel, with big synths, and forward momentum -- doesn't suffer from that occasional "lazy confused beat" feel that some of the LA beatmakers sometimes fall into. I also love that I have NO idea what's being said. But it sounds important!

Lorn - Cherry Moon by BRAINFEEDER

Why a 9 month old track from LORN? Well, first, that stringy-synth lick (or whatever it is) is gorgeous. And the track smolders with funk and tension, which nicely counteracts the melodic and ethereal bits. Plus, it has a strangely 1980s feel to me, the texture of that unrelating 16th note bassline sounds slightly new wave to me, only you don't think twice about it in this track. And the drums are sick.

Something Bells by Daedelus

Another BRAINFEEDER relative, DAEDELUS is blowing my mind all the time. Track has a brisk feel, somehow it reminds me of a beatmaker version of Stereolab. Loving sampled music these days too. Too many musicians starting to use "out of the box" crap they bought.

I've been sick as a dog for the last few weeks with bronchitis, it's been pretty unpleasant, so haven't had a chance to blog in a while. I'm gonna have to keep this one short too, got a lot of catching up on things to do.

Some new tunes posted on Skream's SOUNDCLOUD page.

Here's the new remix of GETTING NOWHERE, from the new Magnetic Man album. The original is a gorgeous, near perfect example of how bass music, when the emphasis isn't on insane mid-range wobbling, can really support gorgeous vocals.

I'm not the biggest fan of this remix, it seems a bit hastily put together, but the tension in the drums is nice, and there are some nice ideas here.

On the other hand, DEMENTED, a new track, demonstrates the best way to make a wobbler -- keep it funky, combine techno and dub influences, and let the thing thud it's way into your brain:

Skream's got a knack for writing great tracks on the 25th of December (apparently, his massive hit MIDNIGHT REQUEST LINE was written on this very day a number of years ago), and XMAS DAY SWAGGER is a great classic dubstepper -- although, it deserves a better title -- haha.

Now if only we could convince Skream to remove the track identifiers -- it's so distracting -- I'd sooner hear a lower quality track to get a feel for a tune than constantly be reminded of the webpage I'm on.

This is especially true for FNKONOMIKA. An autonomic-style track, it has a great sub, and cool piano chords, if only the track ident's didn't break the mood, I could fully rant about how fucking sick this track is!

Take a listen to it anyway -- post your comments, and maybe try to convince Ollie to lose the audio watermarks.

Oh Gosh -- GRIME INSTRUMENTALS

Alright, so I'm sick as a dog, and I just finished this quick blog note about the new Kanye/Jay-Z collabo, and I quickly check my Twitter before planning on hitting the bed and sleeping the day away.

What do I find?

Free grime instrumentals!

Courtesy of S-X, via Elijah Butterz on Twitter, these are some big beats, with very original production. Check out the staccato quasi-classical structure that trickles over top the funky 10.28AM. 09102 is a big, bouncy, blustering club-banger, while BURIAL is a dark, deep track, with a bit of a reggae influence on it's off-beat chord hits. TAKE TIME is a gorgeous slow, mellower track, that could easily be fitted with a gorgeous female vocalist.

And while I have a suggestion for the Butterz people -- have a contest for MCs and vocalists to submit their work over these tracks, and give away the best works -- I have to say, 2011 is shaping up to be the year that I am really digging just listening to the instrumentals. I don't know what it is, but so far, the stuff I'm hearing from Butterz (as well as Terror Danjah's Harddrive imprint) have got me feeling like this is the year that grime is coming back to the forefront, at least to my ears.

Kanye and Jay-Z teaming up to give us Hard As a Motherfucker -- HAM -- from their upcoming album, WATCH THE THRONE, due out March 1st.

Not sure I understand why the food reference, but whatever, this first track slaughters!

Big sub bass, 808-styles, provides the low end, with skittering high hats, and a really pissed off Kanye kicking off the track. Then comes a full-on operatic chorus, with a great string loop, followed by the next verse from Jigga.

I have a love-hate relationship with PITCHFORK -- taste makers are always the last to know what's actually any good, because it always takes time to recognize if something is real or false -- but sometimes, and often enough that I check their site regularly, they share something really golden. Zoo Kid is that "something really golden". The guy is only 16! And not in that "I'm up on ELLEN and I'm a creepy virtuoso kid". This is a genuine talent.

The track has a guitar tone that reminds me of the 80s, a vocal sound that sounds a bit bluesy, PJ Harvey RID OF ME-esque, and a great mood. I hope Zoo Kid makes some big moves this year.

And if you keep listening to the track on PITCHFORK, the one that follows is a stunningly gorgeous song by Julianna Barwick.

This is what I love about SoundCloud, the ability for artists to post works in progress, share them privately, or publicly. Obviously, there are times when sharing privately is important, but it's super brave of an artist to post sketches or works in progress publicly.

Here are some of my favourites.

JAKES posted two new pieces, and the direction sounds wicked.

BROK3N FA1TH bounces, with a smooth string loop, reminds me a little of a Mala track. Skittering hi-hats and big four on the floor beat, with a reggae feel, means that this should go over large in a club, without incessant wobbles and aggy drops (which Jakes is normally king of, in my opinion).

Speaking of something more aggressive, his other post is exactly the kind of noisy track he's great at -- but again, no ridiculously obvious wobbles.

IYAHH by HENCHDUBZ

To me, JAKES is the Bomb Squad of dubstep, bringing the noise, the funk, and crucial rawness to music that increasingly sounds like trance, or worse, meticulously crafted heavy metal.

A newer track, apparently not a work in progress, CPT NEMO is one of those big JAKES tunes that bounces wickedly, without all the those big vocal samples or angry warblings. Check it out, here:

SKREAM's also posted some sketches, like UNTITLED-UNFINISHED -- which sounds pretty good at this stage. In fact, as with a lot of music, sometimes the demos are better than the final product; this track has a charm that I hope doesn't get lost when he finishes it, it feels straightforward and effortless - - two great qualities.

Turns out that December 25 is now officially free music day -- if you were online at all that day, you could have downloaded a bunch of amazing free stuff.

First thing I grabbed was a great FREEIZM album from SKREAM.

My faves include 10 BIT DREAMS, a wobbler with great dubby offset minor chords, to give it a hint of true dub music.

There's also the wicked drum-and-bass/breaksy track EMOTIONAL SIZZLE which concludes the set of tunes. It's an incredible, and gorgeous, way to end the album.

Speaking of grime, TERROR DANJAH dropped an atom bomb on us by giving us a two cd-set of unreleased tracks. I think it's something like 44 tracks long, and it features artists Chipmunk, Wiley, Lethal Bizzle -- fuck, just look at the picture to the right -- "and many more". A lot of great grime artists.

It's the kind of record that will work in a club, and on your shitty iPod earbuds. It's bangin' AND musical.

It actually reminds me a little of the future funk of Missy Elliot's ...SO ADDICTIVE -- the kind of record that sounds futuristic at the time, and ten years later.

I think we'll be listening back to the HARDDRIVE compilation in a decade, thinking the exact same thing -- IT STILL SOUNDS FUTURISTIC. Only, we'll also remember how we got for free for Christmas direct from the artist. ( Big shout out to the internet ; ) )

One of my favourites is UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT, a track that rocks like a grime version of old-school Public Enemy -- love the rock riffs.

Then there's the skittering wildness of DON'T KNOW THE HALF which makes me hit rewind over and over. Love the syncopated hi hat, and the speed of those rhymes!

But my favourite track, thus far, is the absolutely gorgeous TODAY'S THE DAY (feat. Lauren Mason & Elrae) -- horn hits, soulful vocals, and a fast-percussive-2-step-feel rumbling underneath, this song is an instant classic. It's danceable and singable. A breath of fresh air.

LIL WAYNE's BANANAS

This guy is insane.

But we already knew that.

What struck me, listening to this track, is just how strongly rap is rooted in the blues. A blues track, typically, moves around a repeated riff, around a root note. Then it drops down or up to the V and VII notes, before circling back to I.

It's precisely what this track does. The 808 bass drum kick drops down to the V or VII note (I can't remember which one now, I'm not listening to the track as I write) before returning to the root note.

And many early blues artists would improvise lyrics wildly, with legends about where they got their inspiration from -- except, back then, it was from the Devil, now it's... Sizzurp...

Anyway, I'm a big blues fan, and not "white man doing black music" blues, like Eric Clapton (okay, he had some solid tunes, but that's not BLUES to me). If you want to learn more about the blues, you can dig through CHESS RECORDS, with a great catalog of music.

As a Canadian, I have to admit -- I hate being Canadian.

First off, we're pretty redneck and kitschy for the most part. Add to that the fact that we're a small population spread out over an enormous landmass -- with Quebec wedged somewhere just east of center... it's weird.

Our films suck. Our television is... well, 99% American, and the Canadian shit sucks.

But the one thing we've always seemed to manage to do is produce wonderful music -- "pop" music in particular.

I think it has something to do with long, cold winters. Singing sure helps. Listening to music while locked inside isn't just nice, it's a necessity.

I have to confess, my parents moved to Canada (from Germany) in the late 60s, so I always felt like an outsider, someone who felt more at home in Berlin than in... some rural suburb outside of Toronto.

Ugh.

But Canadian music is a blast.

Alright, so now you know -- I HEART CANUCK POP.

But seriously, ARCADE FIRE are wonderful, they've stuck with their less-than-major label, and they're a big sprawling band, with so-ugly-they-are-cool members, and they've put together an interactive music "video" that, I think, is probably the future of the music video. Interactivity -- really engage the audience -- fuck the multi-million dollar videos, that play like an overly long ad for the album.

All that being said (about music videos, I'm off the Canuck theme now for good) -- I love the video for HEART-SHAPED BOX. What the fuck, remember when this was on mainstream music video channels??!

Oh, and Anton Corbijn directed it, and it was originally shot in black and white, then meticulously hand-tinted in Mexico, frame-by-frame, to mimic Technicolor. Okay, that must have cost a fortune, so maybe I'm eating my words.

Discovered a wonderful new track, by FOREST SWORDS, called "Rattling Cage".

It's a very cool mix of slo-mo beats, vocal samples, and blues-meets-new-wave-guitars. Very moving track.

Livingstonesound

Montreal-based dubstep-and-all-other-things-bass-artist Living~Stone has a great handle on what it takes to make a truly wonderful dance-able, but still musical track.

Check out his dubstep track VOODOO:

See what I mean? It combines all the dance grooves that techno and dubstep can offer, without brutally senseless wobbling. And the track unfolds, subtle changes, and dubby treatments, all of which keep DUB alive -- whereas so much of newer dubstep tracks (especially the unfortunately named "brostep" variation) sounds more like heavy metal. Not that that's all bad, but what I'm most interested in is dance and electronic music that feels alive. Yeah, it's all music created by computers, but the dub element is what can make loop-based music seemingly come alive.

16Bit are a duo of dubsteppers that I cannot get enough of.

But it's their track SWINE FLU that first got me hooked on them. It's a great, wonderfully disgusting, huge track. It's jam-packed with the kind of insanity I dig. It keeps it dubby with some reggae-ish off-time guitars and reverb, then it drops in a bit of classical music, and a crazy whirling sample that reminds me of something out of an old skool hip hop track, maybe Public Enemy or something. And then, a couple of weird trash compactor noises later, we're under full-on assault, it's almost Nine Inch Nails-level heaviness. Scratch that -- it might even be heavier.

I (Still) Heart MIA

I heard and read a lot of negative shit about the new MIA record, including the weird Twitter stuff going on with producer Diplo. But recently, I listened to the album again on my iPod and was like, SHIT, this is a great record!

I really have such adoration for MIA, for all of her work, but there are tracks on this album that really challenge the ears.

One of the tracks that surprised me on second (really proper) listen was IT TAKES A MUSCLE. Just listen to the production on this tune, it's far out. During the chorus each "to fall in love" is treated separately, with some autotune shit, and it's also a really gorgeous tune that would probably be just as powerful acoustically. Then there's a few great pure dub moments, especially the short "outro".

I'm also gonna repost a link to her Romain Gavras directed video for BORN FREE. Watch it here and freak yourself out. Then check out the WikiLeak's video COLLATERAL MURDER, and you'll wonder why everyone has been complaining about MIA's inaccurate political aim -- I kept hearing the criticism that she's inconsistent. What the fuck? Of course she is, she's an artist, not a policy-maker. Her record really captures the spectrum everything there is to be pissed off about today, which is fine.

It's your job to make the changes.

Anyway, the video is also strikingly reminiscent of PUNISHMENT PARK -- find it where you can, it's more relevant now than ever. Here's a clip.

Sick of Drake?

Alright, I just blogged about how much I liked the Deadboy remix of Drake, but I can't stand the new duet with Rihanna.

The production on Drake's record was interesting, but whenever he does something like this, the tunes seem to come "straight out of the box". Pre-programmed loops without much effort or attention to detail, easy to swallow mediocrity, safe for your grandma to download now that she's figured out her iPod and iTunes. (No offense gramma, we all love you)...

The beauty is that sites like Hype Machine exist, so you can discover something fresh, for yourself.

One of the new post-dubstep sounds that's been getting some attention is "witch house" -- I'm not really sure what it is, and I'm not sure I like all of it, but there are some really interesting tunes coming out.

More recently, I discovered the wonderful "Creep" (no, not that one) by Days, featuring Romy Madley Croft. I know nothing about these folks, but I like the combination of sexy vocals, with a haunting vibe, a nice club beat, with nice synths, complimented by guitars, especially the reversed ones. Of course, that's among one of the more "pretty" songs in this genre. The inspiring thing about this new trend of electronic music is that it isn't always conventionally pretty.

The already much-hyped "King Night" by Salem is a great example of a piece that's not really all that obviously pretty -- hell, it's not even all that clearly structured, it seems to more about in circles around motifs that have been crushed alongside one another. It's beautiful like broken glass or twisted metal.

But the other wonderful thing about this track, and many in this new strange genre, is that it makes electronic music feel "alive" or "hand made" even. The drums aren't perfectly quantized, and the samples aren't clipped super-tightly. It's sort of like the goth version of what Flying Lotus and the LA beatmakers are doing, but instead of syncopated rhythms reminiscent of jazz, this is industrial blues by way of rap and The Cure.

Instead of posting the track again, I'd like to share this video with you. It documents some of the extreme violence right here in my hometown, which was overtaken by police that brutalized innocent protesters during the G20 summit. (Yes, I'm still angry about it).

Ah, brings back memories of tear gas canisters exploding in a cop car on Queen Street, and being chased by riot police after protesting and just trying to find a way home... the good old days.

(Side note, it looks like our lovely city is going to buy some of the cameras we got for the summit -- source here -- because, you know, the state watching me makes me safer)

Now that I'm good and pissed thinking about this, some darker music for you to listen to... I came across Siamese Noir, a wicked "witch house" (or whatever) project. The music is dark, deep beats, with a vibe that reminds of the genius of Tricky's Nearly God album.

And best of all, this is an artist that lives in the present day, and not in some dwindling past, and is distributing his entire album "ONE" for free via Bandcamp. Download it here.

Swords

You've heard of the game "swords" -- I always thought it meant the following:

Two men using the same toilet to pee in at once. We have a standing rule here - no sword fights. Apparently, there are many more definitions.

So what's with the name Lazer Sword?

Is it a comment on someone's.... junk?

I haven't been able to find out, but what I have learned is that they are a production duo, formerly from San Francisco, now based in Los Angeles and Berlin.

I think one of the first tracks I heard was Batman, which I heard over on Soundcloud:

I guess people are labeling them as post-dubstep, or something, with a bunch of other labels tossed around -- and on their Soundcloud page, they are pretty apt at inventing hilarious new genre names. "Snow Leopard". "Bloopity Vision". "Hawaiian Punch".

To me, they're making the kind of music Timbaland should be making today. Funky, bouncy, spacey. Check out this track that combines the Timbo-bounce vibe with a the kind of overly compressed funk rock we normally expect of Justice. One of my faves by them:

I came across Deadboy a while ago, and I'm a big fan of his sound. He's often compared with Burial, but I find his style a lot more housier, and more obviously danceable -- and that's not a bad thing.

The track that's getting hyped now is his rework of FIREWORKS, by Drake. I have real mixed feelings about Drake -- being from Toronto, I can't help but feel some hometown pride, and FIREWORKS with Alicia Keys is, to me, a genuinely moving track. But sometimes his nasal-inflicted-is-it-always-being-auto-tuned-voice is a bit much. But whatever, the track is killer -- and then I heard the reworking of it by Deadboy, and I was like "but wait, he's killed the emotion... in a Drake song??!!"

But I kept going back to it, re-listening, and discovering it really isn't that he's lost the emotion. He's just given it movement. So this track was a grower for me, check it out here:

I think I must have first heard of him on Mary Anne Hobbs, with the track U CHEATED, a really sexy track, movement and soul all in one. I also like the sort of shuffle, touch-of-samba beat, gives it a timeless feel. Listen to it here: http://hypem.com/track/967438/Deadboy+-+U+Cheated

I don't know what's next from him, but I'm excited to hear it whatever it is.... even if it's another Drake remix!
